St Nicholas’ Church

The tower of St Nicholas’ Church stands in the busy centre of Georgian Whitehaven. There has been a church on this site since 1693 (the first Church in the town), although the current Chapel is the remains of an 1883 built church, most of which was burnt down in August 1971. 

If you are visiting West Cumbria and the Solway then Whitehaven makes a great central place, less than half an hour to Ravenglass (L'all Ratty, Roman Bathhouse, Muncaster Castle), and Wastwater and Eskdale are also nearby, to the North, Maryport - thirty mins (harbour, Roman Museam) and a bit further Victorian Silloth are easily accessible. It takes about thirty minutes to get to Cockermouth,so a day in the Lakes is also easily done.
